THE CHICKEN

There lived a farmer at the outskirts of a town. He is into animal rearing, birds and has a small garden that consists of vegetables and flowers. He lived in a three-bedroom flat, well furnished and has a steady light and water supply.

At his yard thirty steps away from the main building is a place well situated for his chickens. In-between his house and the chicken pen is a lemon tree.

He goes every morning to check their food and water while during the day time he allows them to roam about because the area is fenced.

Out of fifty chickens there’s one that is always curious as to why they have to be locked up every night rather than to be allowed to make the choice of whether to spend the night inside the pen or not.

This chicken always wonders what could be the worst.

The rest told him it has been like that and they see no reason why they should sleep out there when inside is cozier.

Near the chicken pen is a place situated for the sheep to the left. Every time this chicken is acting up by trying not to get into the pen when evening comes, they watch in wonder. One of them calmly said “this chicken’s time will soon be up if he doesn’t stop”.

“Mm-hum” responded his mate. She sighed and walked to a corner to relax.

The owner hardly chased him back into the pen that evening. It was on a Thursday evening.

The next day this chicken was happy to be let out in the morning. He emphatically declared he will not be sleeping in the pen tonight. The rest of the chickens nonchalantly said to suit himself.

The sheep in their own section are already sympathizing with him. The sheep that first made a comment yesterday just restated “what a pity today might be the last we’ll see this fellow. Though he might be lucky to survive”.

His mate asked him what are his reasons for saying that? “Not reasons mate, just a feeling there must be a reason why we are being locked up every night and being let out every morning to enjoy the atmosphere”.

They both looked at the chicken then headed on with the meal in front of them.

This chicken had full energy throughout the day. When evening came, as the rest had started retiring into the pen he decided to fly and rest on top of the orange tree.

The owner came and put every animal in its place and locked them up.

Saturday morning was a quiet one for both the sheep and the chickens for a moment. It was like a silent moment for their beloved fellow and friend that spent the night on the tree.

He was seen under the tree headless and some parts wounded. The owner cleared it.

The sheep called out to his mate “mate!” and she replied “mate!” Life continues.

The rest of the chickens kept on asking themselves what could have happened. Some of them blamed him for bringing that upon himself.

You see, sometimes humans tend to behave like that chicken. The consequences might not be as drastic as the chicken’s but it might leave a lasting effect.

In this life some principles are being set, some laws are being put in place and some instructions are being given. They are for one’s safety but humans tend to prefer breaking them or doing the opposite.

Some do that out of curiosity while some do that thinking it might not mean anything if they act as they please or rather it might not even matter.

For every wrong move there are consequences that await one at the end of the act.

It is better to trade with care than to be reckless and face unwanted consequences.
